Energy for the Handball World Championship

Pon Energy Rental provides Norwegian energy supply for the 2023 Handball World Championship

With four gold medals in the World Championship for our handball girls, it was time for another world championship, hosted here in Norway. After 24 years, the girls will once again don the Norwegian flag and defend the World Championship title, this time in an arena with energy supplied by Pon Energy Rental.

On December 6, the ball was kicked off in Trondheim Spektrum. Several of the Norwegian players are on home turf here in Trøndelag, which means that expectations for the defense of the World Cup title are even higher than usual. While the girls make sure they do their job on the pitch, we at Pon Energy Rental work continuously to ensure the best possible delivery of energy.

Trondheim Spektrum was completed in 2019, and the building maintains very high standards. It has hosted several of Norway’s largest trade fairs, concerts, and other major events. It also has a wide range of meeting rooms and can accommodate up to 12,000 people in its largest areas. Here, the dream of World Championship gold will come true.

At Pon Energy Rental, we deliver a complete energy supply solution throughout the event and provide continuous monitoring and follow-up from the first to the last ball on the pitch. Read more about our adventure during the 2023 Handball World Championship here.

A safe delivery to an exciting event

A World Championship is one of the biggest events in sport, and there is no room for error. For such a large event to run seamlessly, there is a huge apparatus that must function in the background of what happens on the court.

For the final rounds of the Handball World Championship in Trondheim Spektrum in December, we have delivered a large and efficient solution, as well as a highly skilled team to ensure that everything runs smoothly.

Leading this team is Depot Supervisor, Alexsander Stokdal Nilsen. He took the time to talk to us about the project in Trondheim Spektrum, and can tell us about a comprehensive delivery, an exciting project, and custom-built systems.

– “The challenge for this customer was the need for a seamless transition to emergency power if something were to happen to the grid,” explains Alexsander.

In other words, the solution had to be fully automated. The transition to emergency power, without any voltage interruptions, had to be solved with the least possible intervention in the existing main switchboard, and exclude human error.

The solution was an application where the batteries are synced with the main grid and start automatically in the event of a power outage. Alexsander goes on to explain that they found a very good solution to the challenge;

– The solution we ended up delivering was to run a hybrid system with three batteries and generators in parallel with the main grid. To do this, we needed a separate control system for the main switchboard, which also had to be able to communicate with our devices. Here, we simply had to build and implement a control cabinet specially designed for this type of application against the main switchboard,” Alexsander explains.

In other words, no detail is left to chance, and all scenarios are covered with this solution. Using the custom-built control cabinet, they took control of the main switches and got a complete overview of the voltage and amps of the main switchboard at any given time.

A custom-built control system and complete delivery

In total, three 400 kVA batteries were delivered from Pon Energy Rental. This is a new battery unit with a separate input and output inverter that enables different voltage and frequency on input and output. Connections of the PowerLock type were also supplied for these, which makes the connection very efficient.

– “In addition to this, we also supplied a 500 kVA generator with a Caterpillar C15 engine, a control cabinet for the main switchboard, a distribution cabinet equipped with PowerLock quick connection, 6x400A outlets and a total of 74 cable bridges,” Alexsander explains.

“You need a lot of cables to operate such a large system. In total, a set of 50-meter cable sets with PowerLock quick connectors, six 25 meter cable sets with the same quick connectors, nine 240 mm2 power cables with M12 bolts at both ends, cables for control systems and other types of cables were delivered and connected well in advance of the drop-off in Trondheim.

– “We deliver everything needed to run the system, fully connected and ready to use for all our event customers,” says Alexsander, comparing this to large concerts and festivals with a need for backup solutions.

In addition to the solution that will provide a seamless solution for emergency power, the organizer in Trondheim wanted a supply of fast chargers for electric cars. We set this up so that anyone who wanted to charge their electric cars in the parking lot outside the hall.

With us, you can find electric car chargers for all types of events. These come with a 63-amp fuse, 400V in and out, connection via Wi-Fi, connection with app and RFiD reader and with a charging power of between 1.4 and 22 kW.

In addition to the delivery and project in Trondheim Spektrum, we also delivered equipment to DNB Arena in Stavanger. Here, two of the groups in the preliminary round played their matches between November 29 and December 4. Here we were to provide a backup solution for the lighting in the ceiling of the arena throughout the total of 12 matches to be played.

For this project, we delivered a 310 kVA EU5 generator, as well as all the connections and cables needed to deliver a seamless, safe, and efficient solution. The Handball World Cup in Stavanger was a great success, and the adventure continues in Trondheim.
