Equinor will start a new oil field called Johan Castberg in the Barents Sea in 2023. It will consist of an extensive seabed field and an anchored production ship. The ship was manufactured in Singapore and had to sail to Norway. We were challenged to design a temporary power solution to support the vessel during this voyage.
Our clients Equinor and Sembcorp required a solution that you won’t find in any standard power package.
The contract contained demanding requirements for the technical documentation and specifications of all equipment. Every component had to be robust enough to withstand both the tropical heat of Singapore and the extreme weather of the North Sea, as well as the challenging voyage to Stord in Norway. In addition, the equipment had to include fire and gas detection and an automatic self-extinguishing fire system.
To meet these exact needs, we designed and custom-built multiple units, including a switchgear and a high-voltage transformer. The rental solution was built and prepared in Norway and transported to Singapore by a container ship.
We provided three megawatts of power via two 1700 KVA generators that supply a 4000 amp custom-built switchgear connected to an 11 kilovolt high-voltage transformer.
This application ensured a power package for Johan Castberg FPSO, optimized for an operating environment with a very high power requirement and correspondingly limited space.

In today’s rental market, it is important to be dynamic, innovative and solution oriented. Johan Castberg FPSO is a perfect
example of a project where we combine our standard equipment with units that we’ve customised for the project.

Our solutions come with a wide range of standard services
Red-D-Arc Welderentals leases welders, welding positioners and welding-related equipment. They required an offshore power solution during the decommissioning of gas platforms Kinsale Alfa and Kinsale Beta, at the South coast of Ireland.
Our customer Equinor requested us to execute a comprehensive load test before installing gas turbine generators on their offshore vessel. This is the largest load test we have delivered in Norway ever.
Heerema is a company specialised in the engineering and fabrication of complex structures for offshore oil & gas and energy-related industries. Delivering on-time and with high quality and safety standards is firmly set in their DNA.
You’re very welcome to share your energy challenge with us so we can understand what you’re looking to achieve. Our experts will offer you advice and together we’ll create the right solution for your needs.
